Diane Lauderdale, PhD

Diane S. Lauderdale is Professor and Chair of the Department of Public Health Sciences. She is an epidemiologist whose research has included work in a number of areas over the past 20 years, including studies of ethnic differences in health, aging and health, social determinants of birth outcomes, and lifestyle risk factors for chronic diseases. Her work in ethnicity and health has included developing name algorithms to allow the identification of ethnic groups in data sources lacking ethnic information. She has used these to study differences in mortality for Asian American subgroups, birth outcomes for Arab Americans, and diabetes risk for Asian American subgroups. Much of her recent research has focused on sleep and health in population-based cohorts, comparing perceptions of sleep and measured sleep characteristics, and how each relates to physical and mental health. She directs the MS for Clinical Professionals (MSCP) in Public Health Sciences, a degree program that prepares clinicians to carry out research in clinical epidemiology and health services research.
